About the artist

I have lived beside the Thames Estuary in Leigh-on-sea and Westcliff-on-sea most of my life and my work explores my sense of this place and the surrounding landscape of Essex coast and countryside.  My painting practice is sustained by a deep sense of the familiar and entrenched memories of the landscape, walking and drawing and returning to the studio to paint.

Whether I am walking in woodlands or along the shore, I look at the structure of objects, natural and manmade, how a creek moves through the space, how light is reflected and bounced around a woodland or under a pier, how branches reach out to one another and I think about how to find an equivalence for this experience in paint.  I want my painting to convey to the viewer the sense of place but also the experience of creating a painting so that the marks and layers and time spent creating it are visible.

Time in the studio is time for exploration and reflection; I often work on several paintings at once so that one will lead to another and ideas hopefully flow, I like to be surprised by the end result.  Currently I am exploring how to use my experience of the landscape to create paintings that have a strange surreal quality, landscapes where abstract things can happen.
