About the artist

I am an Essex based artist living on the shores of the Thames Estuary. I love to explore colour and form in paint and mixed media

My work derives from a direct response to my surroundings, exploring light, space, structure and sense of place.  I find that I am drawn to those less loved places and things, edgelands, places of decay and desolation.  The Estuary is in many ways one of those edgelands, to those of us who live here, it can be quite beautiful in all its colours, textures and moods.  It provides endless possibilities for my work.

My initial practice involves a period of intense looking and enquiry, working in sketchbooks and exploring history of a place, getting inside the subject.  Even with all this thought and preparation, the final paintings are arrived at intuitively, using paint in an expressive way, allowing it to evolve over time. It is great to be surprised by the end result; that is the joy of painting.
